The Canberra Division of the Australian American Association have marked the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea with a commemorative service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Australian-American Memorial in Russell Offices, Canberra.

In history’s first great naval action between aircraft carriers, a combined naval task force, including aircraft carriers USS Lexington and USS Yorktown and the three cruisers, HMAS Australia, HMAS Hobart and USS Chicago stopped the advancing Japanese naval strike force. The battle is said to have saved Australia.

Tingira Australia Association Patron, Vice Admiral Russ Crane AO, CSM, RANR and Tingira President, Lance Ker, laid a wreath on behalf of the Tingira Australia Association for all Tingira Sailors who participated with the Australian naval ships during this battle.

The Coral Sea commemoration will become an annual event in Canberra for the Tingira Australia Association with the Australian American Association.P1210230
